DOSAGE

Dosage Recommendations for Modafinil

For patients with narcolepsy, it is recommended to take 200 milligrams (mg) of Modafinil per day. The drug is taken as a single dose in the morning.

While studies found that people can tolerate up to 400 mg per day, there is little evidence to support any additional benefits from taking doses above 200 mg/day.

Individuals with shift work disorder (SWD) can also take 200 mg/day of Modafinil. However, workers should take the dose approximately one hour before their shift starts.

Note that patients with liver disease should reduce the recommended dose to 50%. The same goes for elderly adults, especially if they have any concurrent medical conditions.

Dosage Recommendations for Armodafinil

The dosage for Armodafinil is slightly different from Modafinil. Instead of taking 200 mg a day, the dose varies from 150 to 250 mg daily, depending on the treated condition.

For instance, obstructive sleep apnea requires doses up to 250 mg/day. However, the dosage can be reduced to 150 mg/day if necessary. While the drug will help with sleep apnea, it is not a cure.

If the patient has any renal disorders, no dosage adjustment is necessary. The same applies to mild to moderate liver disease. However, severe hepatic disease requires lowering the dose. There are currently no standard guidelines to modify the dosage for these patients.
